Carlos Uriel Sumano Arias is a researcher with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He has spent the last decade cultivating partnerships with chimpaneros – farmers who maintain artificial islands in Mexico City’s Lake Xochimilco – and advocating for sustainable farming practices that help maintain the delicate aquatic ecosystem. He works with chimpaneros to implement techniques for managing these traditional agricultural systems while restoring habitats to support native creatures like the axolotl.
