Meet the Gopher Tortoise!

In longleaf pine forests across the southeastern US, gopher tortoises are critical to maintaining balance among hundreds of other plant and animal species. The tortoises are ecosystem engineers that dig deep burrows that give critical shelter to 350 species of insects, mammals, birds, and amphibians throughout the region.

Their blood may be cold, but their heart is all warm inside!
