Agoutis are large, adorable rodents found in Central and South America – and they’re critical players in keeping forest ecosystems healthy.
They’re the only animal capable of breaking open the seeds from the agouti tree, and as seen in Tijuca National Park, the entire ecosystem begins to weaken when agoutis go missing.
