Wildlife rehabilitation is the process of caring for sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into the wild. Wildlife rehabilitators are trained professionals with a permit from the government. They provide the necessary care to nurse sick and injured animals back to health, including by working closely with veterinarians or providing surrogate mothers to orphans. This work can play an essential role in conservation for at-risk wildlife populations, such as manatees in Florida or sea otters in California’s Monterey Bay.
